Ascend with Black Hills Balloons, where adventure takes flight. Located in the heart of South Dakota’s stunning Black Hills, we offer unforgettable hot air balloon rides that lift you above granite peaks, pine forests, and wide-open skies. Whether you’re planning ahead or already exploring the area, our Sunrise Flight — available daily from May through October — is the perfect way to start your day with awe.
We’re not a big-box balloon company. We’re a small, passionate team dedicated to creating intimate, safe, and memorable experiences. From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel the difference; personal attention, expert pilots, and a crew that treats you like family. Our balloons are vibrant, our views are unmatched, and our commitment to safety is second to none. In fact, we’re proud to be the only FAA-certified balloon repair station in the region.
When you fly with Black Hills Balloons, know that you’re flying with people who’ve made every sacrifice to be here, to share this day and moment with you. Our hope, however high (pun intended), is that you’ll be inspired to do the same; to enjoy the simple things and take time to smell the mountain air.
We know the Black Hills like the back of our hand.
We are invested in maintaining our equipment to the highest industry standard.
Safety and serenity are our top priorities.
From Custer State Park to Crazy Horse, the scenery is breathtaking.
No crowds, just you and the sky.
Dress for a hike in the woods. Closed-toed shoes and layers are recommended. NO OPENED-TOED SHOES. During the flight, the temperature should be no different than what you feel on the ground. A quick weather check can prepare you for the highs and lows of the day. Dress for the low (before sunrise) and you’ll be in good shape.
A camera, of course! Also, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are recommended.
Flight altitude varies daily, from treetops to a few thousand feet; allowing for the best views and steerage to the best available landing site.
Not likely. Hot air balloons go with the wind so there is very little sensation of movement. If you close your eyes, the balloon can gain hundreds of feet in elevation without notice.
Due to insurance restrictions, we cannot fly pregnant women or children under 4. We also do not recommend flying if you have a broken bone or a recent injury. Please call and discuss any potential health restrictions prior to booking.
